Natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola has taken a lot of flak from the mainstream medical community for his recommendation to lessen fish consumption due to mercury contamination.

A new U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study, however, provides proof that mercury contamination through fish is indeed a cause for concern.

USGS scientists detected mercury contamination in every fish sampled in nearly 300 streams across the country, with more than 25 percent of the sampled fish found to contain mercury levels which exceed the accepted level established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Also, more than two-thirds of the samples exceeded the EPA level of concern for fish-eating mammals.

Mercury is a global pollutant associated with brain, central nervous system (CNS), immune, kidney, lung and psychological damage. It is especially dangerous to the CNS because it binds firmly to the structures in this system and has a half-life of between 15 to 30 years.

Mercury poisoning usually involves a disturbed sensation, impairment of the senses and lack of coordination. It has also been linked to extreme fatigue, fertility problems, memory and vision loss, impaired blood pressure regulation, and neuro-muscular dysfunction.

Babies and women of child-bearing age are the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of consuming mercury-contaminated fish. Mercury exposure can cause blindness, cerebral palsy, deafness and mental retardation to fetuses and infants. In low doses, mercury can still impair a child’s development, resulting to shortened attention span and learning disabilities.

A 2005 report from the Centers for Disease Control showed that one in 17 women of child-bearing age have mercury levels (above 5.8 micrograms per liter) that could harm a developing fetus.

Mercury finds its way into bodies of water through the water cycle. For the most part, mercury in the environment comes from coal-fired power plants. The smoke from the burning coals releases mercury into the air, which is transferred to water once it rains. Cement kilns and some types of mining also release mercury into the atmosphere.

Once it reaches the bodies of water, the inorganic mercury is transformed by bacteria to an organic form called methylmercury. This process is called methylation and it greatly increases the toxicity and bioaccumulation potential of mercury.

The larger the fish, the higher the levels of mercury they are likely to be contaminated with. According to the National Resources Defense Council, the bodies of predatory fish such as large tuna, mackerel, sharks and swordfish can contain mercury levels that are 10,000 times higher than those of their surrounding environment!

Ideally, fish is one of the most nutritious foods you can eat and is an excellent source of omega-3 fats. But because the threat of mercury contamination is very real, you should be careful with the type of fish you’re consuming and serving your family. Dr. Mercola warns. Aside from the fish mentioned above, you should also avoid halibut, largemouth bass, marlin, pike, sea bass, walleye and white croaker, unless lab tests show that they come from a clean source.

The wild red salmon from the pristine waters of Alaska is one of the few remaining mercury-free choices in the U.S., and is the only fish Mercola eats. Smaller fish, like anchovies and sardines, are also an option because they are less likely to be contaminated.

Less fish consumption may lead to a deficiency of animal-based omega-3 fats but fortunately, this problem is easily remedied by taking safe fish oil or krill oil supplement.

If you can’t avoid eating fish, you can take a mercury chelator, like chlorella, to help minimize the risks. Dr. Mercola is currently working on a deal with the inventor of the newest mercury chelator, which is at least 100 times more effective than any existing ones, so the product can be made available next year. You can also visit GotMercury.org to use the online mercury calculator, which helps you make healthier seafood choices.

Does food taste a little off or different for you lately? If you’re a smoker, don’t be surprised. This may be another side effect of nicotine.

A new study conducted in Greece suggests that cigarette smoking may cause “decreased taste sensitivity,” making your food less palatable.

Researchers from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki tested 62 young soldiers with the average age of 25, almost half of whom were smokers. Their tongues were tested for taste sensitivity and the shape of their taste buds was also checked.

The scientists discovered that the smokers’ tongues were flatter than the buds on the tongues of the non-smokers, though there was no difference in the number of tastebuds between the two groups.

This suggests that nicotine may cause “functional and morphological alterations of taste buds without severely affecting their number.”

If you’re a chain smoker, losing your sense of taste may not be as worrisome as the other dangerous effects of smoking. For every stick you smoke, you inhale some 4,000 toxic chemicals, over 40 of which – including nicotine – have been directly linked to cancer.

Today, almost one-third of fatal cancer cases and one-fourth of all fatal heart attacks in the U.S. are associated with smoking. Aside from cancer, other diseases attributed to smoking include, angina, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other respiratory ailments.

Smoking is tough to overcome because nicotine, when ingested, makes you feel relaxed, and as smoking becomes a habit, your body develops a physical and psychological addiction to nicotine. That is why when a smoker tries to quit smoking, withdrawal symptoms occur.

But it is not impossible to quit smoking. For Dr. Joseph Mercola, the best way to treat substance abuse is to not start using harmful substances in the first place.

Simply reducing the number of cigarettes does almost nothing to lower a smoker’s risk of cancer. That is why complete abstinence is required. Quit cold turkey – it’s the only way to go.

Hard times are upon us but that still isn’t reason for you to crinkle your forehead and frown because despite all the problems, life is still good.

Positive thinking and optimism, besides helping improve your relationships, career and general outlook in life, have many proven health benefits.

A new study from the University of Pittsburgh, the largest study on the effect of positive thinking on health to date, suggests that being an optimist can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and even death.

Some 97,000 women were monitored as part of a long term study and were asked simple questions to define who was an optimist and who was a pessimist. The researchers found that optimists had reduced their risk of developing heart disease by nine percent and their risk of dying from any cause by 14 percent.

Also, scientific evidence shows that optimism influences recovery time. Patients who have positive thoughts and expect to recover well usually do.

Your mental attitude can greatly influence your physical health. Whatever you focus your constant and consistent thoughts on are often manifested into reality. That is why positive thinking is one of the most profound things you can do to stay optimally healthy.

You can exercise and strictly follow a proper diet and lifestyle but if you don’t pay attention to your emotional health, your other healthy living efforts may go to naught.

Dr. Joseph Mercola recommends the Meridian Tapping Technique (MTT) (formerly known as the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT ) as one of the top strategies to help give you a positive outlook on life. EFT is a simple and effective method which helps turn positive affirmative statements into reality in your life.

Keeping a journal, meditating and praying are also other tools you can use to improve your outlook. Seeing a half-empty glass as half-full can help you live a fuller and healthier life.

Losing a tooth can be unsightly, especially if it’s a front tooth. It’s hard not to get self-conscious when this happens. Not having a complete set of teeth can also lead to eating problems.

Nowadays, it’s quite easy to replace missing or badly diseased teeth using dental implants. Implants have an advantage over dentures, the traditional way of replacing teeth.

Dental implants are composed of an artificial root covered with a dental crown. The artificial root is surgically attached into the jawbone and once healed, is used to anchor the artificial replacement crown, which is permanently attached to the implant. The result is an artificial tooth which blends in perfectly with the other teeth.

Dentures, even with advances in dental technology, are still far from perfect and cause many problems for patients. Many still complain of pain, particularly those using a complete set of lower dentures. On the other hand, partial dentures, which are used when only several teeth are missing, are anchored to the teeth on either side of the empty area using a metal clasp, and can be very damaging to these teeth.

Also, as a patient ages, new sets of dentures need to be made to fit the changing gum tissue and chewing surfaces of the teeth in the dentures.

But dental implants also have their fair share of concerns. As with all types of surgery, infection can occur, but these cases are rare.

The real concern is the exposure to metal ions 24 hours per day because dental implants are made of pure titanium and/or a titanium alloy. Chronic exposure to titanium, which is not biologically inert, may trigger inflammation, allergies, hypersensitivity and autoimmune disease in susceptible individuals.

Intolerance to metal implants is not something new. Majority of patients who had their incompatible dental material removed experienced reduced metal sensitivity and long-term health improvement.

Among the severe problems reported after receiving titanium dental implants include muscle, joint, and nerve pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, neurological problems, depression, and skin inflammation.

Though it is rare, cancer is a well-known complication of orthopedic surgery that involves metal implants. The use of implanted titanium can potentially induce the abnormal proliferation of cells (neoplasia), which can lead to the growth of malignant tumors.

In 2008, a 38-year-old woman was reported to have developed bone cancer almost a year after getting a titanium dental implant. Luckily, she was successfully treated with chemotherapy.

The presence of any metal in your mouth also leaves you prone to “galvanic toxicity” because your mouth essentially becomes a charged battery when dissimilar metals are present in the saliva.

All that is needed to make a battery are two or more dissimilar metals and a liquid medium that can conduct electricity (i.e. electrolyte). The metal dental implants, fillings, crowns, partials and orthodontic braces in your mouth are the dissimilar metals, while saliva is the electrolyte.
The movement of the metal ions from the metals in your mouth into the saliva generates electricity known as galvanic current, which can actually be measured using an ammeter!

The electricity produced increases the corrosion rate of the metal-based dental restorations, which hastens the release of metal ions into your mouth. In turn, these metal ions react with other components of your body, leading to sensitivity, inflammation, and ultimately, autoimmune disease.

Some people are very susceptible to these internal electrical currents and may experience unexplained pain, nerve shocks, ulcerations and inflammation. They may also notice a constant metallic or salty taste, or a burning sensation in their mouths.

There is also a concern that the oral electricity may direct electrical currents into brain tissue and possibly disrupt the natural electrical current in the brain.

If you don’t want to settle for dentures but want to avoid the dangers of titanium dental implants, high-strength ceramic dental implants have become alternatives to metal-based implants. Metal-free zirconia implants, which are popular in Europe and South America, are now available in the U.S. They are highly biocompatible to the human body and release low levels of metal ions compared to traditional metallic implants.

The swine flu scare has slowed down but first-world countries around the world, including the U.S., are still bent on creating a swine flu vaccine.

There’s a strong possibility that American children would be among the first test subjects of a mass swine flu vaccination when they go back to or start school this fall.

This is a disturbing development because the swine flu vaccine might be more dangerous than the swine flu itself!

How the Swine Flu Vaccine is Developed

Vaccines are concocted by using dead viruses or live ones that have been weakened and made less harmful, natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola explains.

Aside from using a particular virus strain (in this case, the h1n1 virus), flu shots can also contain many dangerous substances such as antifreeze, formaldehyde and phenol.

Many vaccines also use immune adjuvants, which trigger your immune system to overreact to the introduction of the virus you’re being vaccinated against.

Adjutants hasten your immune system’s response to the immunization, which means a lesser amount of vaccine required per dose and a smaller number of doses given per patient.

Less vaccine required per person means more individual doses available for mass vaccination campaigns and, more money for Big Pharma.

The government has contracted several drug companies to develop and produce swine flu vaccines, and at least two of these companies – Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline – are using squalene as the adjuvant in their respective versions of the H1N1 vaccine.

The Dangers of Squalene in Vaccines

Your immune system recognizes squalene as an oil molecule native to your body, as it is found throughout your nervous system and brain, Dr. Mercola explains. You can consume squalene through foods like olive oil to experience its antioxidant properties.

However, squalene can quickly turn into something harmful, depending on its route of entry. When squalene is injected via a vaccine, it triggers your immune system to attack all of the squalene in your body, not just the vaccine adjuvant.

This means your immune response will try to wipe out all squalene molecules, including in places where it naturally occurs in your body and is vital to your nervous system.

Novartis’ squalene adjuvant for its h1n1 vaccine is known as MF59, an unapproved adjuvant used in experimental anthrax vaccines for soldiers who served in the Gulf War. This form of squalene has been linked to the devastating autoimmune diseases suffered by Gulf War veterans known as the Gulf War Syndrome (GWS).

Documented GWS symptoms due to squalene adjuvant include arthritis, fibromyalgia, lymphadenopathy, rashes, photosensitive rashes, malar rashes, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, abnormal body hair loss, non-healing skin lesions, aphthous ulcers, dizziness, weakness, memory loss, seizures, mood changes, neuropsychiatric problems, anti-thyroid effects, anemia, elevated ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Raynaud’s phenomenon, Sjorgren’s syndrome, chronic diarrhea, night sweats and low-grade fevers.

A study published in 2000 revealed that 95 percent of deployed soldiers suffering from GWS symptoms had antibodies to squalene and 100 percent of GWS patients given anthrax vaccine shots, while NONE of the deployed Persian Gulf veterans who did not show signs and symptoms of GWS had antibodies to squalene.

Even the World Health Organization has opposed the fast-tracking of the swine flu vaccine. “One of the things which cannot be compromised is the safety of vaccines,” WHO chief Dr. Keiji Fukuda said.

Would you allow yourself and your child to become Big Pharma’s guinea pigs this fall for this untested and potentially dangerous vaccine?

The information you’ve just read may go against your understanding of the nature of vaccines. As a parent and as a health conscious individual, it’s your responsibility to know the facts, and not just rely on your doctor or the media.

The International Vaccine Conference, the single best conference on vaccines in the world, will be held on October 2 to 4 at Reston, Virginia. This important event is held every five years and features the most knowledgeable experts, who will tackle the most pressing and timely issues concerning vaccines.

Do consider attending. Think of it as an investment for your child’s health and the health of future generations.

Flip flops have become part of summer fashion over the years. A favorite among women, flip flops have also become a hit among men because people can wear them the whole day, particularly in the warm weather.

Flip flops come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Rubber thong sandals like Havaianas flip flops are very popular in the U.S. and around the world, and are used not just in the beach but basically, everywhere. However, health experts warn that these slippers are not entirely foot-friendly.

The first and most obvious reason is that flip flops leave your feet fully exposed. If you’re not used to trudging around in slippers, you can trip over the tip of your flip flop and damage your foot. This is no joke – some foot doctors have had to surgically reattach tendons to patients’ toes.

Flip flops lack structure, and any shoe that can be folded to fit your back pocket is not good for your feet because good footwear should flex where your foot flexes and where your toes bend, says Dr. Noreen Oswell, DPM, one of the founders of the Los Angeles-based podiatric medicine clinic The Foot Center.

Shoes that can be bended to form an arch, like flip flops, cause strain which often leads to an inflammation of the tissues that run along the bottom of the foot. In order to keep flip flops on, many people grip their toes and are unaware that they are straining more than their foot muscles.

When your toes try to grip the bottom of your flip flop, this action is the opposite of what your toes should be doing at that time. This improper action shortens your natural stride, prevents the natural “locking” of your foot and forces your hip and leg muscles to work harder, causing some muscles to shut down.

Taking shorter strides also means taking more steps, and the more steps you take, the more shock for your feet to absorb. Your flip flops’ thin soles won’t absorb a lot of shock, and that shock is transmitted to your next available shock absorber, the knee joints, and could travel up to your lower hip and back.

These changes can be felt all the way up to your neck, jaw and head, Muscle Activation Techniques specialist Tony Bruno warns. Long-term flip flop use can also contribute to hammer toes, the abnormal bending of one or both joints of the second, third, fourth or fifth toes, which is characterized by pain, irritation, corns and calluses on the affected toes.

This doesn’t mean that you should throw away your flip flops – just stick to using them on the beach and at home. Look for flip flops made from leather or suede to cut down on blisters. Use shoes with more cushioning and arch support and make sure that your footwear bends at the ball of your foot.

A small but growing body of research is suggesting that the human body is well-adapted to running barefoot (PDF FILE), thus, walking barefoot on a clean, natural surface could potentially help contribute to your good health.

Start taking your foot health seriously this summer. Go for what’s healthy, not what’s trendy.

If you’re thinking of getting a shot of Gardasil to protect yourself and your daughter from cervical cancer, you better think twice because this vaccine may turn out to be one of the worst things you can do to your health!

Cervical cancer affects about 13,000 women in the United States each year, killing around 4,000. Around the world, almost half a million contract the cancer, resulting in some 225,000 deaths.

The sexually-transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) has been blamed for causing most cervical cancer cases. The Gardasil vaccine, which is recommended for women and girls as young as 12 years, was approved without a hitch by the FDA in 2006 to help fight the disease, even though it was only tested on about 1,000 girls.

Gardasil contains genetically-engineered virus-like protein particles and aluminum, which affect the immune system. However, the vaccine’s mechanism of protection is unknown and it has not been evaluated for the potential to be carcinogenic nor tested for possible toxicity to the genes.

By the summer of 2009, Gardasil had already caused more than 15,000 thousand reports of adverse vaccine reactions, injuring more than 3,000 and killing 48, with 14 deaths claiming girls under the age of 16.

Known Gardasil side effects include:

Fainting

Seizures

Numbness and tingling

Pain and extreme fatigue

Hair loss

Rashes

Other health problems

Do Women Even Need an HPV Vaccine?

A study by the Journal of the American Medical Association on the prevalence of HPV infection among American women suggests that cervical cancer is not the dangerous disease that the media and pharmaceutical companies are portraying it to be and showed that:

Just 2 percent of the patients in the study were infected by HPV strains that greatly increase their risk of cervical cancer.

About 3 percent were infected with the types of HPV that Gardasil was developed to prevent.

About 90 percent of all HPV infections go away within two years. Even the American Cancer Society (ACS) concedes that the incidence of cervical cancer, once one of the leading causes of cancer death in American women, has declined by 74 percent between 1955 and 1992 largely due to the increased use of the pap smear test, which can detect any changes in the cervix before the cancer develops and find early cervical cancer in its most curable stage.

The ACS also states that the cervical cancer death rate continues to decline by almost 4 percent a year and rarely develops in women younger than 20.

Dr. Joseph Mercola adds that since HPV is sexually transmitted, it is nearly 100 percent preventable by modifying lifestyle habits.

While Gardasil is far from being safe, its manufacturer Merck is actually pushing for the use of this HPV vaccine on boys.

You can help prevent Gardasil from becoming a full-blown vaccine disaster. The National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is petitioning the Obama administration and Congress to investigate Gardasil vaccine risks.

Visit the NVIC website to view the petition and learn more about HPV and Gardasil.

We eat to live. But however important eating is, people tend to take mealtimes for granted because of their busy lifestyles. With deadlines to beat and meetings to attend, many are used to getting things done in a hurry.

However, eating is not something that should be rushed because it leads to stressful, unhealthy living.

Nutrition and fitness expert Marc David, founder and director of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, points out that Americans tend to eat under a state of stress and anxiety. You could be eating the healthiest food available but you won’t necessarily be digesting and assimilating it properly because eating under stress puts your body in the opposite condition of where it should be in order to digest and assimilate food.

Eating under stress causes dramatic changes in your body’s metabolism, including:

Slower nutrient absorption

Excretion of nutrients, particularly water soluble vitamins, macrominerals and microminerals

Spike in blood cholesterol

Increased food sensitivity

Decreased gut flora population

Heartburn

Increase in cortisol and insulin

The hormones cortisol and insulin track each other. When cortisol increases, insulin decreases. The two hormones signal your body to store fat and stop building muscle, effectively causing weight gain.

The simple act of taking time to eat a meal can have a profound effect on your health. Here are the reasons why you should start eating slower:

Weight loss – It takes about 20 minutes for your brain to realize that your stomach is full. David explains that if you eat too fast, your brain will often interpret that missed experience of nuances and pleasure in taste and aroma as hunger, which will lead to you eating more. If you eat a big meal but don’t pay attention to it and just devour it, you’ll notice that your belly feels full but your mouth still feels hungry. Eating slowly will give you time to realize that you’re full and signal you to stop on time.

Relaxation – Ever wonder why Europeans, who consume more wine and fat in their diet, manage to stay slimmer than Americans? That’s because they take their time while eating and treat meals as a celebration. They shut down work and take two-hour lunches. Eating with friends and family helps lower stress and allows people to relax and enjoy food as a gastronomic pleasure.

Better digestion – Digestion starts in your mouth; the more work you do there, the less work your stomach has to put in to effectively digest your food. Eating slower means chewing your food properly, which helps you break down your food better.

Breaking free from the fast food culture and fast-paced lifestyle – Americans are crazy about all things fast – fast cars, fast computers, fast mobile phones, and fast food, which unfortunately, is a fast route towards obesity. Break free from the on-the-go lifestyle that is dehumanizing America, making people unhealthy, stressed out and unhappy. You deserve better.

Eating is not just something to do but something to experience. The simple act of eating slower will lead to a healthier and happier you.

Milk is one of the oldest foods and one of the first health products. But nowadays, milk is no longer what is used to be. Sure, we now have a lot of options when we go to the supermarket – pasteurized milk, skim milk, powdered milk, flavored milk, soy milk – but not of these come close to the real thing.

Raw milk from grass-fed cows is milk in its natural state and is one of the healthiest foods you can consume, says Dr. Thomas Cowan, co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Dr. Cowan is convinced that a large part of disease in the United States is linked to how Americans handle or mishandle milk and milk products. It is a little known fact that pasteurized milk is the number one allergic food in the country and has been associated to a number of health problems, including:

Arthritis

Autism

Bloating, Cramps and Gas

Cancer

Diarrhea

Heart Disease

Infertility

Leukemia

Osteoporosis

Recurring ear infections and colic in infants and children

Dr. Joseph Mercola explains that raw milk is generally not associated with any of the above health problems. Even people who are allergic to pasteurized milk can typically tolerate and even thrive on raw milk.

Pasteurization, which heats milk in temperatures between 145 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit, alters the structure of delicate milk proteins, transforming it from something beneficial to something harmful, allergenic and disease-causing.

Raw milk from grass-fed cows is an exceptional source of nutrition and is superior to processed milk in every aspect. It is a completely balanced food composed of :

Proteins – Raw cow’s milk contains all the standard amino acids, which your body does not need to convert into usable form. Almost 80 percent of milk proteins are caseins, which are easily digested and reasonably heat stable, while the remaining 20 percent are whey proteins, which are also easy to digest but very heat sensitive. Raw milk also contains complex proteins called immunoglobulins, which help fight viruses, bacteria and bacterial toxins and may also help relieve asthma symptoms.

Carbohydrates – Lactose (milk sugar) is the main carbohydrate in raw milk. Lactose-intolerant people cannot digest milk because they are incapable of producing the enzyme lactase, which is necessary to break down milk sugar. The lactose-digesting Lactobacilli bacteria is found in raw milk, which may allow people who have traditionally avoided milk to drink raw milk.

Fats – About two thirds of milk fat is composed of saturated fat, which helps construct cell membranes and important hormones, provide energy storage and protection for delicate organs, and serve as a vehicle for important fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamin D. Grass-fed raw milk also contains up to five times more Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), which has cancer-fighting properties, helps inhibit the formation of body fat, lower insulin resistance, enhance muscle growth, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and help reduce food allergies.

Vitamins and Minerals – Raw milk is a complete food which contains both water and fat soluble vitamins, unlike pasteurized milk, which needs to be enriched. It also contains a number of minerals ranging from calcium and phosphorus to trace elements.

Cholesterol – We naturally manufacture most of the cholesterol we need in our bodies. Milk contains about 3mg of cholesterol per gram.

Beneficial bacteria – While most food normally go bad as it ages, raw milk actually gets better because it has self-protective properties from good bacteria.

Enzymes – Raw milk contains 60 functional enzymes, some native to milk and some coming from the beneficial bacteria present in raw milk. These enzymes all have their respective roles to help keep you healthy. For example, consuming food that contains enzymes help lessen the load on your pancreas. Enzymes also help make milk safer to drink by protecting it from bad bacteria.

Stop missing out on the benefits of raw milk. Drinking and buying raw milk is perfectly legal in all states. What’s illegal, is selling it to the public, except in eight states: Arizona, California, Maine, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington. The other 42 states have a number of different rules. For more information on how to find raw milk in your area, visit http://www.realmilk.com/where.html

Kidney stones are one of the most common urinary tract disorders and can be among the most painful conditions a person can experience. A stone is formed when the kidneys are unable to prevent urinary wastes from sticking together, crystallizing and forming a solid mass.

Most kidney stones are easily eliminated from the body. A small stone may be excreted without causing too much pain. However, a large kidney stone can get stuck in a ureter, the bladder or the urethra, blocking the flow of urine and causing:

Pain in the side, lower back or groin area lasting between 20 minutes to an hour

Bloody, cloudy or foul-smelling urine •	Nausea and vomiting

Pain in urination

Persistent urge to urinate

Fever and chills

Almost one million Americans develop kidney stones annually. Men are four times more likely to suffer from kidney stones than women. People living in the southern part of the U.S., where the climate is hot, have an increased risk of forming kidney stones since they can get dehydrated, causing their urine to become more concentrated.

Heredity can also increase your risk. The younger you are when you form kidney stones, the greater your risk of recurrence. Once a person has experienced a kidney stone attack, the chances of a recurrence are between 70 to 80 percent.

Dr. Mercola explains that the rising cases of kidney stones among adults and children alike are the side effect of our modern eating habits. Different types of kidney stones are formed depending on the highest concentrations of substances in your urine, like calcium oxalate, which comes from eating too much dark green vegetables, nuts and chocolate.

A diet high in sugar and high fructose corn syrup interferes with the calcium and mineral absorption in your body. A study showed that drinking soda worsens conditions in the urine that contributes to the formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones.

Eating too much processed salt from processed foods and sports drinks are also blamed for increasing the risk of kidney stones in children.

A sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, the consumption of soy and caffeine, and taking certain drugs such as Lasix (furosemide), Topomax (topiramate), and Xenical, have also been associated with the formation of kidney stones.

Kidney stones should not be taken for granted because they can be a lifelong problem and can lead to serious kidney damage. Thankfully, making simple lifestyle changes will greatly help you avoid suffering from a painful kidney stone episode:

Drink a lot of water – The safest and simplest way to treat a kidney stone is to let it pass on its own. Drinking plenty of water will help dissolve kidney stones by decreasing the concentration of solids in the urine. Teach your children the benefits of drinking water. Avoid tea because it’s high in oxalates

Eat according to your Nutritional Type.

Eat foods rich in magnesium and vitamin B6, which help prevent the formation of kidney stones.

Limit your intake of sugar, caffeine, excess salt and processed foods.

Exercise to keep your body’s fluids circulating.

Avoid taking prescription drugs.

If you’re suffering intolerable pain from a kidney stone attack, herbs like nettle leaf, bearberry, cleavers, corn silk, crampbark, gravel root, kava kava, khella, hydrangea, stone root may help relieve the symptoms. But remember: consult a natural health physician or an expert herbalist before trying any herbal products
